Series Statement

Practice-Based Structural Essay is an attempt to give structure to forms of practice-based knowledge that are difficult to formalize academically, rather than leaving such knowledge as mere intuition.

Practice-Based Structural Essay is a small series of essays that describes, as structure, the sensations and judgments that recur in practice — instead of leaving them as intuition.

Asked on site “why did you do that?”, we often cannot explain, and answer “somehow.” Yet behind that word, there is often a reliable structure of judgment, absorbed into the body through years of practice.

Neither an academic paper nor a diary, the series began as a format of its own for describing practice-based knowledge. It may also offer a small starting point for thinking about the “somehow” in your own everyday life.

Before the Capture

A Structural Essay on Pre-Capture Judgment in Photographic Practice

Has photography already begun before the photograph is taken?

This essay looks at the judgments that take shape in the photographer before the shutter is released. Distance, light, movement, silence, the density of a field, the decision to photograph or not — it is an attempt to describe, as practice-based knowledge, the sensations that recur at the scene of photographing.
