On exhibiting
A photograph does not end at the moment of the shutter.
Placed in a space, meeting someone’s gaze, it begins a new time.
A gallery in the city. A cultural site on an island. An exhibition space abroad. Each place lends the work its own air, and a different face.
Sense of Place
Calling up the sense of a place.
Two people can stand in the same place and not see the same thing.
For one it is everyday life. For another, a memory. For someone else, a story.
A cat’s gaze. The time of people passing through. The memory a landscape keeps.
Each exhibition took a different subject: life and gaze, people and time, landscape and memory. What connects them is not the subject, but the attention to what forms between a subject and the place it belongs to.
The trilogy was not planned from the start. Only on reaching the third exhibition, looking back, did it become clear: it had been Sense of Place all along.
Life and gaze. The eyes of rescued cats make a place felt as somewhere to live.
People and time. The hours of those crossing a small island leave their trace on it.
Landscape and memory. A familiar view turns quietly inside out and calls up another time.
Photographs record what is seen.
Words give form to what is not.
Together, they call up the sense of a place.
Three exhibitions, one perspective — and that perspective is Sense of Place.
The idea took shape through an ongoing dialogue with co-curator Professor Kazuhiko Mori, Kyoto University of Advanced Science.
反転する現実 — Reality, reversed
The third exhibition at Kyodo News headquarters, following Cat’s Moment of Truth and LIVE PASSENGER. The gaze turns to landscapes and spaces around the world. These are real places — yet when light, memory and the viewer’s imagination overlap, they begin to carry another presence. An attempt to raise a Sense of Place.
Chapter I · 2023 — 2025 · Life / Gaze
The gaze of cats asks a question.

Through the gaze of cats, recovering a sensibility toward life that we may be losing.
Without language, cats are remarkably sensitive to being alive. Their eyes hold joy, unease, and a strong will to go on. I call that moment the Moment of Truth.
Alongside the photography, he is involved on the ground with rescue-cat shelters, recording the time of small lives as they are lived.
If a photograph can remind someone, when they welcome a cat, that adopting a rescue cat is an option — the world becomes a little kinder.

Chapter II · 2025 · People / Time
Living as a passenger of time.

A photographic project exploring human existence as a transient presence within time. The setting is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea — not only its memories, but the people living there, then and now.
We are all passengers flowing through time. Something may stay with you as you look.
And in that moment, your journey may already have begun.

“Working in liminal spaces.” Not a concept arrived at, but one that grew from a way of being — standing between logic and sensibility, fieldwork and strategy, city and island. It stands on its own, outside the Sense of Place trilogy.
