Rescue Cats — Photographic Project
The cats’ gaze, into society.
Without words, cats have an extraordinary sensitivity to life. In their eyes are joy, uncertainty, and the will to go on living. I photograph those moments.

Why I photograph
Beyond cuteness,
there is a life being lived.
When people hear “rescue cat”, their first response may be pity. But after years of photographing them, I have come to feel that pity alone is not enough.
The time before rescue, the distance they keep from people, the gradual change in their eyes: what I photograph is not their helplessness, but the life each cat has lived.
I do not photograph cats merely as cats, or people merely as people. I call the relationships and atmosphere that emerge between a subject and a placeSense of Place . My photographs of rescue cats are grounded in this same perspective.
These images grew out of documenting life inside rescue-cat shelters.

Statement
A gaze
speaks beyond words.
When I meet the gaze of a cat,
I feel a dialogue of life that needs no words.
I preserve the feeling of that moment as
a quiet record of the relationship between people and living beings.

Held at UME SAKURA in Kyoto, with a sign in a tatami room and seasonal flowers arranged for the exhibition. The encounters made there led to an appearance on OBC Radio Osaka’s “Azusa Kuwahara no as life” and, later, to radio programme production.
The 2022 “NEKO SAKURA” exhibition was also featured in a KBS Kyoto news report.

Cat’s Moment
of TruthThe cats’ gaze poses a question
The gaze of cats invites us to rediscover a sensitivity to life that we humans may be losing. Presented at Kyodo News Headquarters’ Gallery Walk in Tokyo in 2023 and at the Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village on Shodoshima in 2025, the exhibition formed Chapter I of a photographic trilogy.

“Cat’s Moment of Truth” is a photographic project that considers our sensitivity to life through the gaze of cats—and what that gaze might help us recover.
Without words, cats
are extraordinarily sensitive to life.
Alongside my work as a rescue-cat photographer, I engage with shelter environments and document the time and lives of these small beings. I hope these photographs might remind someone considering welcoming a cat into their home that adoption is an option.
Every cat lives its own life, in its own time. I believe recognising that can make our world a little kinder.

Photography does not end
with an exhibition.
I want more people to know that rescue cats exist. This report introduced my photographic work and exhibitions.
In 2022, KBS Kyoto covered “NEKO SAKURA” in Kyoto, showing the exhibition venue and works.
